Welcome to the Ohio Medicaid Assessment Survey (OMAS) Series Dashboard

This interactive tool provides a data-driven view of Ohio's health and healthcare landscape. You can select data to analyze, examine trends, and compare key populations. The dashboard provides fast, real-time results, giving you plots, maps, and tables you can insert into documents and presentations. You can use it without knowing any programming or statistical techniques.

Dashboard Overview

This dashboard includes four tabs that allow for a variety of different analysis. Please see below for a short overview of each.

  • Trend Over Multiple Years: Produces estimates for an outcome over multiple years, including trend plots and estimate tables
  • Single Year Estimates: Produces single year estimates, including bar plots and estimate tables
  • Map: Produces maps and tables for county-level direct estimates
  • SAE: Produces maps and tables of county-level estimates produced using Small Area Estimation (SAE) in order to more precisely estimate outcomes at the county level

About the OMAS

The Ohio Medicaid Assessment Survey (OMAS) Series is administered by the Ohio Department of Medicaid with the assistance of the Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center (GRC). The OMAS provides information about health status, health care access and service utilization, and select behavioral risks for residential Ohioans, with a concentration on Ohio’s Medicaid, Medicaid-eligible, and non-Medicaid populations. It is a critical research tool to help the Ohio Department of Medicaid and its fellow state agencies to:

  • Monitor the effects of health policy
  • Identify gaps in health services
  • Develop strategies to increase service capacity
  • Monitor Ohioans' health status and health risk
For information about the OMAS methodology and the complete OMAS Series datasets, please visit the OMAS homepage .

Using the OMAS Dashboard

Click on any section below to expand and see more details.

The Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center (GRC) acts as the administrator of the OMAS Dashboards. If this page and the inline help resources do not answer all of your questions about the OMAS dashboard, please email the OMAS team at omas@osumc.edu.

Inline Help

The OMAS Dashboard has help buttons that provide additional information about all the dashboard's components. Click on the question mark buttons next to each component to learn more about what it does. To close, click the button again.

The OMAS Dashboards are optimized for use in recent versions of Mozilla Firefox and Google's Chrome browser on a laptop or desktop screen. Other browsers such as Internet Explorer, older browsers, and mobile devices may not render this application correctly. Additionally, the dashboard's interactive interface depends on JavaScript, which is built into your web browser. However, some organizations disable JavaScript or block certain kinds of content. Check whether JavaScript is enabled in your browser.

By default, estimates are created for all Ohioans (adults or children, depending on the dashboard type). You can also filter your results to refine your analysis:

  • By survey year: Selecting one or more Year(s) from the slider will provide estimates for only your chosen year(s).
  • By select subpopulations: Selecting from the Subpopulation menu will provide estimates for only your selected subpopulation.
  • By age: Selecting an Age Range from the slider will provide estimates for only your specified age range.
  • By household income: Selecting an Income Range from the slider will provide estimates for adults or children who reside in households with your selected household income range.

Notes

  • Note that age and income filters are inclusive - for example, selecting an age range of 25-64 will include 25 year-olds, 64 year-olds, and all ages between.
  • Filters apply cumulatively: For example, selecting the subpopulation Females and an age range of 25-64 will constrain the analysis to persons who are female and who are between 25 and 64 years of age.
  • Remember to click the "Compute Estimates" or "Show Estimates" button to obtain estimates based on your revised selections.

This option allows you to compare results across values of a variable, such as comparing results for different types of insurance coverage. Remember to click the "Compute Estimates" or "Show Estimates" button to obtain estimates based on your revised selections.

Estimated Proportions and Counts

Estimates in the OMAS Dashboard are computed using data from OMAS respondents. The survey design makes the data representative of Ohioans. Estimates in the plot are of the estimated proportion (percentage) of Ohioans, while the table and map present both the estimated percentage and estimated count of Ohioans.

Confidence Intervals

The 'I'-shaped line at the top of each bar or dot represents the 90% Confidence Interval for the estimate shown. This US Census Bureau page discusses what Confidence Intervals are and how to interpret them.

Suppression of Unreliable Estimates

When the precision of the estimates is too low, typically because the sample size for the estimate is too small, results are either hidden from view or are replaced with N/A. For an estimate to be displayed, all of the following must be satisfied:

  • The numerator of a univariate estimate contains responses from 10 or more respondents;
  • The denominator of a univariate estimate contains responses from 30 or more respondents;
  • The coefficient of variation (CV) of survey-weighted estimates is 30% or lower.

The trend and bar plots are created using a tool called Plotly. When you hover over a plot, a toolbar appears in the upper-right corner. Feel free to try all the tools on this toolbar to work with your plot, or visit this Plotly guide to learn more.

  • The first camera icon in the toolbar allows you to download the plot as a png image format.
  • Hover over each point estimate in a trend plot, or bar in a bar plot, to get a pop-up displaying more detail about the estimate.
  • In addition to using the toolbar, you can double-click the plot to zoom in, or click and drag on a region of the plot to zoom to that region. Double-click again to zoom back out.

The features available on the maps are similar to those on the trend and bar plots. Hover over a region on the map to highlight it and see more specific estimation information for the selected region.

Each estimate table provides a set of columns including both the estimated proportion (expressed as a percentage) and estimated count of Ohioans, as well as a measure of the associated certainty of the estimate (the confidence interval) for each. Table columns are as follows:

Column Name Explanation
Estimated Percentage The survey-weighted estimated percentage of the selected population who have a particular value for the indicator.
XX% CI LB Percentage The lower bound (LB) for the XX% confidence interval (CI) of the estimated percentage.
XX% CI UB Percentage The upper bound (UB) for the XX% confidence interval (CI) of the estimated percentage.
Estimated Count The survey-weighted estimated total number of people in the selected population who have a particular value for the indicator.
XX% CI LB Count The lower bound (LB) for the XX% confidence interval (CI) of the selected population.
XX% CI UB Count The upper bound (UB) for the XX% confidence interval (CI) of the selected population.

See below for additional details on working with the estimate tables produced on the OMAS Dashboard:

  • Click on a table column heading to sort by that column. Click on it again to sort in the opposite order.
  • Click on any of the file-format buttons to download a file of that format.
  • Click on the 'Column Visibility' button to change which columns are visible.
  • Type in the Search box in the upper right-hand corner to filter the table rows to your search term.
  • Click on a column heading and drag right or left to rearrange columns.

All variables in the OMAS Dashboard are derived from the Ohio Medicaid Assessment Survey Series. Variables are documented at the OMAS Project Site.

Age

Persons of 18 years of age were sampled as adults in 2010 survey, but were sampled as children in all following OMAS iterations. The age range available for selection therefore depends on the survey year(s) chosen. The Trend over Multiple Years tab shows the subset of ages which are common to all selected years. For example, if 2010-2017 is chosen, then the age range for children will say 0-17, but if 2012-2017 is chosen, then the age range for children will say 0-18. For a single year selection, eighteen-year-olds will be included as part of the range of adults for 2010 and as part of the range of children for all other years.

Income

Household income is presented as a percentage of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) for the year prior to the one in which the survey was conducted. That is, in the 2015 survey respondents were asked about their 2014 household income for the year.
